Nissan Sentra B17 (2013–2019): Knocking Noise Causes, Troubleshooting & Repair Costs

1. Diagnostic Overview for Nissan Sentra B17 (2013–2019)

When a Nissan Sentra B17 (2013–2019) develops a knocking noise, it suggests critical engine bottom-end connecting rod bearing failure, severe piston slap, or dangerously loose suspension ball joints.

Platform-Specific Advisory: On this vehicle, pay specific mechanical attention to CVT transmission judder/whine and rear brake caliper guide pin rattle. Addressing the acoustic symptom early prevents cascading failures in neighboring engine or chassis subsystems.

2. Step-by-Step DIY Mechanical Inspection Checklist

Before taking your Nissan Sentra B17 (2013–2019) to a garage, perform these visual and physical checks safely:

• Inspect engine oil filter for bronze or aluminum metallic flakes (rod bearing wear signature).
• Listen whether knocking noise tracks exact engine RPM and deepens under acceleration load.
• Notice if knocking disappears when individual cylinder spark plug coil is unplugged (isolates worn rod bearing).
• Pry gently on lower control arm ball joints and tie rods to detect dangerous mechanical suspension play.

3. Estimated Repair Costs & Part Replacements

Standard workshop repairs for a knocking noise on a Nissan Sentra B17 (2013–2019) typically fall in the range of $350 – $2,800.

Pricing varies based on genuine OEM vs. aftermarket component selection, mechanic labor rates, and whether related hardware (such as mounting bolts, seals, or tensioners) requires simultaneous renewal.
