What Causes a Squeal When Turning?
Turning the steering wheel places a heavy load on the power steering pump. If your car has a hydraulic power steering system, the pump forces fluid through the rack to help turn the tires. This puts resistance on the power steering belt.
- Loose Power Steering Belt: The most common cause. The extra load makes the belt slip over the pulley, causing a sharp squeal.
- Low Power Steering Fluid: This usually sounds more like a "whine" or a "groan" than a pure squeal, getting louder the further you turn.
